At a recent wedding fair I met a lovely couple that were worried about their images and maybe even a little unsure of what they wanted. This is quite normal and it's really my job to help the couple find out what they ultimately would like to end up with, as far as products go as well as image style etc. The more and more I spoke to the couple - I realised they were 'my kind of couple', meaning that they liked the images in my examples that I enjoyed capturing and they had a similar outlook on the images for their big day as a whole. After further conversation they turned to me and said 'it's a shame you're not working in Lapland'! A bit of a strange statement until they explained that they were planning on a winter wedding in Lapland! WOW!! The images started popping into my head, I could envisage the look of the album almost instantly!
The point of this post is really this.........I suggested that why not take your 'local photographer' with you? There are many photographers that wouldn't consider doing this as a job, however, having worked for a few years as a destination photographer in Cyprus (i.e. meeting the couple a couple of days before the big day that was booked either through a travel company or wedding planner) I understood the worry and apprehension that they were going through. It's hard enough to arrange your big day but to do it in a foreign country with foreign laws and sometimes a language barrier!
Is it viable to take your photographer? Yes, why not! My wedding packages are not just based around the products but also the customer service and my whole belief of booking your wedding photographer is, they should be someone you'd invite even if they weren't working - someone you get on with, someone you click with (pardon the pun!!) For the price of flights and simple accommodation to cover a couple of days, is it worth loosing the customer service? Knowing that you know the photographer, knowing that IF anything did go wrong they are local and you can converse with them properly......these things to me are worth a lot more than plane tickets.
H2 Photography and H2 Productions shoot all over the world and take destination bookings and requests every year. We have a different pricing structure for our destination packages, as should most photographers, so if you are planning a destination wedding - please ask! If you are getting married abroad it doesn't mean you can't have the quality of images and products that you would rather.
Oh yeah, by the way - I am now waiting for my plane ticket to arrive for Lapland!!!
